I'm 34 years old, African American and an Ovarian Cancer SURVIVOR!!
It was once perceived to be a disease that primarily affected women who we
re over 55 and Caucasian, the truth is, it affects women of all ages and ethnicities. Ovarian Cancer does not discriminate. Ovarian Cancer is the leading cause of death in women amongst all gynecologic cancers. It's often referred to as the silent killer, because unlike other diseases the symptoms are vague and it's usually not detected until it's in it's advanced stages. What many don't realize is that this disease is no longer silent!
Throughout my journey with cancer I've seen a lot and learned a lot. What became evident to me very early on was that women knew very little about Ovarian Cancer and minority women knew even less. Yes, it's true this is a HORRIBLE disease. It's also true that there are many women who won't live five years after there initial diagnosis. There is no known way to avoid getting Ovarian Cancer, but there are things that you can do to prepare yourself for the battle!!
Unfortunatley, minority women are not surviving as long as their Caucasian counterparts due to enormous disparities in healthcare. Survival rates for all women increase dramatically with early detection and quality treatment but for many minorities, we live in a world where economic and social disadvantages still exist. The result is far too many people who don't have access to first-rate healthcare and more importantly far too many who are lacking essential information and education about diseases such as cancer, that would enable them to make informed decisions about their body.
It is my mission to help bridge the gap in healthcare. I encourage women of all ethnicities to commuinicate and share their experiences, help me bridge the gap. This site is dedicated to informing and empowering women to take control of their health and educating them to become the best advocate there is for what's happening in their body. This site was started because of my journey with Ovarian Cancer, but I hope that it will become a vehicle to discuss all women's health issues openly and honestly. I encourage you to share your stories here in an open and honest forum.
Let's make Teal the new Black, together we can save lives...one woman at time!
